There's a Bach Festival effect, and it has to be recognized. Seeing a church filled to the rafters with organ music, after an equally sold-out concert by Ensemble Masques the day before, and a week earlier, a sold-out harpsichord recital by Luc Beauséjour at Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours: all this is more than remarkable, because it's truly tangible.

Avant le quatuor à cordes, il y avait le consort de violes : un ensemble raffiné réunissant plusieurs instruments de la famille de la viole de gambe, de la basse à la dessus, joués à l’archet. Contrairement au luth, la viole soutient la note, la fait respirer et chanter, offrant une émotion proche de la voix humaine. Dans un consort, chaque instrument a son rôle, comme les voix dans un chœur :![]()

Before the string quartet, there was the consort of viols: a refined ensemble bringing together several instruments from the viol family, from bass to treble, played with a bow. Unlike the lute, the viol sustains the note, lets it breathe, and sings, offering emotions close to the human voice. In a consort, each instrument has its role, like voices in a choir:![]()
